Compare health insurance for 2026

The health insurance comparison tool from studentenverzekering.nl helps young people and students find the best health insurance in a simple, accessible way. Enter your personal preferences, such as your deductible and the supplementary cover you want, and our tool instantly calculates which policy is the best value for your situation.

How do you choose the best health insurance?

Everyone who lives or works in the Netherlands is required to take out basic health insurance. To make the choice easier, we have broken the process down into four clear steps.

Step 1: map out your healthcare needs

Look at the care you used over the past year. Do you expect a lot of physiotherapy or dental costs again next year? Or are you in good health and rarely have any costs beyond your GP? A realistic estimate helps you decide whether supplementary insurance pays off, or whether you are better off covering those costs yourself.

Step 2: decide on your deductible

The compulsory deductible (eigen risico) for 2026 is €385,-. This means you pay the first healthcare costs under the basic insurance yourself. Visits to your GP, maternity care and postnatal care are exempt.

As a student you can choose to raise your deductible voluntarily, up to a maximum of €885,-. In return you get a substantial discount on your monthly premium. This is financially attractive if you expect to need little care, but make sure you have the amount set aside for emergencies. Read more about the deductible (in Dutch).

Step 3: choose your type of policy

The type of policy determines which healthcare providers you can go to:

  • in-kind policy (naturapolis): the insurer pays the full bill at contracted healthcare providers. If you go to a non-contracted provider, you often pay part of the bill yourself.
  • combination or reimbursement policy (combinatie- of restitutiepolis): you have more freedom to choose your own hospital or doctor. The premium for these policies is considerably higher, however.

Step 4: do you need supplementary insurance?

Many healthcare costs for young people fall outside the basic package. The supplementary covers students choose most often are:

  • dental care
  • physiotherapy
  • cover abroad
  • contraception

Our approach and independence

Since 2005, our mission has been to make the complex insurance market transparent for students. We compare all major health insurers in the Netherlands. An insurer can only be missing if it does not make its premium data available or does not meet our quality standards.

Revenue model and objectivity

When you take out insurance through our website, studentenverzekering.nl receives a one-off fee from the insurer. Important to know: this fee has no influence whatsoever on the ranking in our comparison tool. The results are sorted solely on the basis of your filters and the lowest price. We use the income to improve our information and tools every day.

Cooling-off period

After switching through our site, you always have a statutory right to a 14-day cooling-off period. If you switch before 1 January, your new insurer also cancels your old policy for you automatically.

Reliable information

Studentenverzekering.nl is the independent authority on student insurance in the Netherlands. We have been making complex matters clear since 2005.
